Review: "Lulli"

Jennifer Green

An appealing cast and light tone keep this middling Brazilian comedy afloat, but just barely. Star Manoela -- much funnier in the recent Secret Diary of an Exchange Student -- is hampered by Lulli's script, which seems to want to avoid going too deep. But staying on the surface means we don't get to know any of the characters well enough to feel they're flesh and blood. This is disappointing because some, especially goofy best friend Vanessa (de Godoi) and sweet gay buddy Julio (Malheiro), had potential. Vanessa's ability to mind-read also offered up the opportunity for a lot more interesting scenarios than exploited here.
