Mexican filmmaker Alejando González Iñárritu’s Digger is Birdman for the post-climate catastrophe age. The director has updated his 2014 multi-Oscar winner, swapped out Michael Keaton for Tom Cruise and punched in more political messaging. The result is an uneven satire featuring an imposing performance by Cruise that has landed at the box office with a resounding thud.

The cast’s exaggerated performances and the film’s stagey scenery can be explained away by the storyline, but the script’s general lack of subtlety is harder to excuse. Even if you agree with the propositions, a more nuanced critique would be more fun—and it's required if you aim to persuade naysayers.

Instead, this is a film made for an audience already in agreement with its politics and willing to be impressed by craftsmanship over story.
